WHITSTABLE 2 - 1 WHYTELEAFE
Saturday 3 December 2011
Ryman League Division 1 South
Whyteleafe lost out in this bottom of the table clash despite taking the lead which only served to spark the hosts into life.
The first half was very forgettable. Paul Smith in the visiting goal had a couple of saves to make from Stuart Vahid and JP Collier. Leafe had to wait until the 28th minute for their first shot on target. Kwabena Agyei was brought down on the edge of the box. Jerson Dos Santos took the kick, forcing a good save from Jack Smelt.
Ashley Henry-Brown found Agyei on the edge of the box in the 38th minute. His shot on the turn was saved by Smelt. Two minutes later Fabian Batchelor had a shot deflected for a corner.
Leafe started the second half rather more strongly than the first half and took the play to Whitstable. Dos Santos had another free kick from 30 yards that went just wide. On the hour, Dos Santos was brought down, this time Scott Simpson took the free kick, floating it into the box, where Batchelor was the first to react, heading home from close range.
This seemed to kick start a previously subdued Whitstable side into action. Smith saved bravely at the feet of Damian Able in the 66th minute and saved again from the same player in the 69th minute. It was Able again in the 76th minute causing problems in the Leafe defence, and this time he was brought down in the box. Collier struck the penalty well to equalise.
The hosts then scored the winner in the 81st minute with a superb strike from Gary Mickleborough. Both sides had shots cleared off the line in the closing stages but Whitstable held on for an important three points.
