WHYTELEAFE 0 - 1 CARSHALTON ATHLETIC
Saturday 24th January 2012
Surrey Senior Cup - Third round
Whyteleafe made a number of changes with Steve Griffin taking charge following the departure of manager Nicky English. Griffin gave debuts to Prince Francis N'Gokumu and Tommy Smith, and also brought Chris Webster and Lee Stripp back into the side. Leafe gave Premier division side Carshalton a good run for their money and it is likely that Griffin will be given time to stake his claim to make the manager's position his own.
The game was a good contest with both sides playing good football and chances were created at both ends. Jay Garrick, another player not used much recently but given a chance by Griffin lead the line well and in the 10th minute, created the first good chance when he found Karl Douglin 25 yards out. His shot went over the bar. Garrick himself had a 26th minute shot blocked after good work from Scott Simpson.
The visitors first good chance of the first half fell to Dean Lodge in the 35th minute. He made a strong run into the box and shot just over the bar.
A superb move from Leafe in the 37th minute involving Simpson, Garrick and Douglin ended with Garrick hitting a dipping curling 25 yard shot that keeper Luke Badialli did well to tip over the bar. At the other end N'Gokumu did well to save at the feet of Luke Nolan after Paul Vines found him in the box. Vines then missed a great chance to put the Robins ahead just before half time, shooting wide from close range.
Whyteleafe came out strongly in the second half and in the 48th minute, Craig Pitterson shot over the bar from a Simpson cross.
Carshalton scored what was to prove the winning goal in the 52nd minute when veteran striker Vines was left too much space in the box and fired the ball into the net unchallenged.
Leafe played some nice football and created a number of chances to get back into the game. Jerson Dos Santos went close in the 60th minute, shooting just wide, and in the 65th minute Douglin forced a good save from Badialli. Bajrush Halili was brought down running towards the visitors goal in the 76th minute. The resultant free kick from Dos Santos was well held by Badialli.
Carshalton were on the back foot but still dangerous on the break. N'Gokumu made a good save in the 80th minute to deny Kennedy Adjei.
Pitterson had a shot in the 83rd minute tipped round the post by Badialli, then a minute later he made a fine save from another Douglin shot. Dos Santos saw an 86th minute free tick take a deflection from the defensive wall but Badialli was alert to the danger and made a fine save. The resultant corner found Halili in the box but Badialli was quickly out to block his shot and see his side through to the next round.
Whyteleafe: N'Gokumu, Dudley, Henry-Brown, Fleming, Aldous, Stripp (Smith 80), Pitterson, Douglin, Garrick (Dos Santos 55), Webster (Halili 45), Simpson. Subs not used: Cartledge, Smith.
