WHYTELEAFE 0 - 1 RAMSGATE
Saturday 20th November 2010
Ryman League Division 1 South

Ramsgate completed the double over Whyteleafe and in doing so jumped above them in the league table.

Honours were fairly even in the first half but the second belonged very much to the visitors and but for a string of saves from Rob O'Hara the winning margin could easily have been higher.

Chances were few and far between in the first half. Chris O'Flaherty was the danger man for the hosts and his ninth minute cross was well defended by Mitchell Sherwood, putting it out for a corner under pressure from Alec Brown. Three minutes later a cross from Dean Gunner was headed on by Fred Fleming to Kwabena Agyei who headed wide with keeper Jack Smelt doing enough to put him off. Play got bogged down in midfield and it was the 35th minute before another shot at goal, this time Daryl Coleman shooting just wide from 25 yards.

Ramsgate went close in the 42nd minute, Simon Pettit putting Tom Tsangarides clear but he shot over. The final chance of the half fell to Whyteleafe when Coleman's long through ball found Agyei whose shot was saved by Smelt.

The second half belonged very much to the visitors with nearly all of the play at one end. Paul Axon broke clear in the 55th minute but was denied by a great saving tackle from Danny Oakins. Two minutes later a long hopeful punt into the box was dropped by O'Hara but he recovered in time before the visiting forwards could take advantage. Then O'Hara again could not hold a shot from Axon, but dived on to the ball bravely at the feet of Warren Schulz.

Rams skipper Ben Laslett played a neat one-two with Schulz before shooting over in the 70th minute. O'Hara made a string of good saves as Ramsgate were firing in shots, two notable saves from Aaron Beech, tipping the ball round the post diving to his left.

Ramsgate got the break they were looking for in the 79th minute when Axon was pushed in the box, and the substitute referee, who had replaced the original ref at half time, awarded a penalty. Sherwood struck the spot kick well to give Ramsgate a 79th minute winner.

'Leafe pushed forward in an attempt to snatch a late equaliser, even pushing up giant keeper O'Hara for a late free kick, but the visitors held out for a victory that they deserved.

Whyteleafe: O'Hara, Frith, Gunner, Fleming, Coleman (Batchelor 76), Stripp, Oakins, Reid, Brown (Smith 56), Agyei, O'Flaherty (Grant 81).
