Whyteleafe earned a replay against Blue Square South side Welling Utd with an impressive display in which they dominated long periods of the match against their opponents from two levels higher up the non league pyramid.
Stuart Massey's side are doing things the hard way, having been held to a draw in each round so far before progressing, but this time they will be pleased with the result as, unlike previous rounds, they were playing higher ranked opposition.
'Leafe went straight on the attack from the kick off with Paul Scott going on a dangerous run in the opening minute, giving the hosts an early warning that their visitors were here to have a go.
It was however the hosts who took an early lead. In the fifth minute, Charlie Sheringham (son of former England International Teddy), won the ball in the 'Leafe box and chipped it across the face of goal to Ryan Martin who headed home at the far post. Five minutes later Rob Tolfrey was booked for bringing down Sheringham when he came out of goal to halt his break.
Whyteleafe gradually got back into the game and in the 14th minute, Asher Hudson was inches away from getting a head to a Steve McNamara free kick. But in the 28th minute, another McNamara free kick from a similar position this time did get a vital touch from Hudson and the equaliser.
Five minutes later another McNamara free kick was blocked. Adam Broomhead saw his shot from the rebound go straight to keeper Jamie Turner. Welling thought they had taken the lead in the 38th minute when Chris Nurse headed home an Orlando Smith cross, but the referee had blown for a foul.
'Leafe's chances were coming mainly from McNamara free kicks, and another in the 49th minute found Ronnie Green, but his shot went over the bar. Turner misjudged a throw out in the 53rd minute finding Rob Smith. He put Scott through but his effort was blocked for a corner.
Welling brought on three subs and one of them, Sonny Cobbs was put through by Sheringham in the 54th minute but he shot wide. A minute later Denva McKenzie set up Nicky Greene, but the winger's shot was straight at Turner. Scott found Greene at the far post on the hour but the angle was too narrow and again he found Turner. A minute later Scott set up Jason Goodchild, but his effort was charged down.
Moment later Green was brought down on the edge of the box, and Turner managed to save McNamara's free kick grabbing the ball as it ran loose. Smith had a fine 70th minute shot blocked for a corner.
'Leafe had a great chance to score in stoppage time when Rivers was put through. He found Richard Harris in space in the box, but a last ditch challenge by a Welling defender saved the home side's blushes. Tolfrey, having been a spectator for most of the second half, was called on to make a great save from a Tony Sinclair header deep into stoppage time to clinch the replay.
Whyteleafe: Tolfrey, Hudson, McNamara, Reeve , Broomhead, Goodchild, Green, Smith, McKenzie (Rivers 90), Scott (Harris 82), Greene (Riley 82).
