Whyteleafe 0 Peacehaven & Telscombe 0
FA Cup Preliminary Round
Saturday 30th August 2008

Neither side really managed to get to grips with the heat of this late August day and good chances were few and far between. Whyteleafe probably had marginally better of the possession overall but Peacehaven despite being from two divisions below gave a very good account of themselves and were a credit to themselves and to the Sussex League.

The first shot of the game fell to the visitors' Wes Millis but his long range effort sailed well over the bar. Richie Watton also had a half chance on 16 minutes but he headed wide of the back post to Whyteleafe's relief.

At the other end a Steve McNamara corner reached the far post where an unmarked Adam Broomhead had an opportunity but his shot too went wide of the target. Alhajie Jabbie looked in positive mood on the right hand side having side-stepped an opponent on 25 minutes he had a shot on goal that was well blocked by another Peacehaven defender.

The closest anyone came to scoring came 11 minutes later. McNamara took a corner that curled dangerously in at the far post, it rebounded of one of a mass of head, appeared to hit the post and rebound out although on or two witnesses though it actually hit the stanchion over the line.

Whyteleafe had the better of the end of the half but the best chances were missed: a Michael Riley cross was just too high for Ricardo Williams and a long range shot from Robbie Smith was too high.

The second half saw renewed pressure from the home side. The sting was taken out of a Jason Goodchild shot on 50 minutes which was then easy for Peacehaven's keeper, Owen Fisher, to take. Then after a good run down the right Michael Riley found Williams who beat two defender but put his low powerful shot wide.

Riley was looking busy at this point and another run down the right ended with a powerful strike that was just too high and wide to trouble Fisher.

Two substitutes combined on 73 minutes as Paul Scott created to space for himself on the left, his cross found Chris Lapierre but Fisher was a match for the resulting cross.

It almost went horribly wrong for 'Leafe two minutes later when a Asher Hudson was left standing with his hand in the air as Peacehaven's Ryan Smith beat the offside, Hudson managed to get back to hassle Smith into a weak shot that was easy for Tolfrey.

Mcnamara hit the visitors' crossbar direct from another trademark inswinging corner on 79 minutes.

Whyteleafe then had a goal disallowed a minute from normal time. A cross from Paul Scott on the left found Lapierre unmarked at the backpost where he tapped the ball home only to see the linesman flag him offside.

The final half-chance in the game fell five minutes into injury time when an overhead effort from Lapierre went well over.

The two sides must now prepare for the replay at Lancing on Wednesday night.
