Report: Phoenix Sports 2-5 Whyteleafe FC
There were 4 big memories for Leafe to take home from this game. 2 in the first half, a spectacular headed clearance off the line by Scott Day and a great strike with the last kick of the half from Lanre Azeez, and in the second half, a hat trick from Vance Bola and a wonder strike from Sam Clayton that will be hard to beat for goal of the season.
The first opening came after 7 minutes when the visitors had a decent penalty claim turned down. Vance Bola found Sam Clayton on the left and his shot was blocked by the hand of Tony Robinson. After 18 minutes Scott Day put Bola clear. He was pulled back by Danny Young who was a little fortunate to escape with a yellow as Bola had a clear run at goal.
Seven minutes later Young nearly took advantage of his reprieve, his goal bound shot from a corner saw a diving headed clearance from Day who was back helping out the defence. Bola's 29th minute shot from a Bradley Simms cross was blocked then Days 25 yard effort in the 36th minute was deflected for a corner. Leafe took the lead right on half time. Bentley Graham found Simms on the right. He picked out Azeez on the edge of the box and his well struck shot gave Steve Phillips no chance.
Leafe started the second half brightly and were on the attack from the start. Clayton beat 2 defenders in the 48th minute and shot from the edge of the box but straight at the keeper. 4 minutes later Bola had a close range shot blocked. The rebound fell to Clayton, and his shot was curling inside the far post but a great effort from Phillips saw him tip the shot round the post. The resultant corner from Clayton was met by Bola who headed firmly into the back of the net.
Phoenix pulled one back in the 57th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Ashley Probets struck it well into the net, sending Kyle Merson the wrong way.
The visitors soon restored their 2 goal advantage. A 61st minute move saw Axzeez send Day clear. His shot was parried by Phillips but only into the path of Bola who slotted the ball home from close range.
Bola and Azeez both went close with Leafe having nearly all of the play before Bola increased the lead in the 73rd minute, taking the ball round the advancing Phillips before slotting it home into the empty net. Three minutes later Clayton scored a stunning goal out of nothing. from around 30 yards out his curling, dipping shot went over keeper Phillips and dipped under the bar and into the net. Most certainly a strong candidate for goal of the season. With his number already on the board, it was his last kick of the match.
Phoenix got a consolation goal in the 82nd minute. Young headed a free kick from the left across goal where Zac Bryon was on hand to score from close range. Leafe could have scored more, Bola and Day both having one on one chances but Phillips did well to deny them both.
