Report: Whyteleafe 4-1 Greenwich Borough
Whyteleafe maintained their push for a play off place with a convincing win over Greenwich to keep themselves in third place. A fantastic start to the game with some clinical finishing saw Leafe 4 goals up inside 26 minutes and although they took their foot off the pedal somewhat, and the finishing later on wasn't there, the game remained entertaining with some good football played.
Ironically it was Greenwich who had the first decent chance of the game, Olutoysi Olosanya heading over the bar from a corner after just 50 seconds. Leafe made a great start. In the 5th minute. Marvin Armstrong made a good run down the left wing and his cross from the left was not cleared properly and there was a scramble in the box, the ball eventually falling to Bradley Wilson who latched onto it and hammered a left foot shot into the roof of the net.
Leafe doubled their lead in the 10th minute, another good build up saw the ball go to Kelvin Ogboe on the left, he cut inside a defender into the box and his shot from a narrow angle went in off the far post. Lauris Chin could have scored the goal of the day in the 14th minute. He picked the ball up on the half way line wide on the right, and ran straight towards the visitors area, outpacing the rather cumbersome Greenwich defence, but his shot from the edge of the box was wide of the target.
The third came in the 20th minute, a long ball found Chin on the left wing and his pin point cross was converted by Wilson from close range. The game was effectively over in the 26th minute when Wilson became the provider, his long cross ball found Chin, who brought the ball down with a great touch and fired it into the visitors net. Greenwich forced a save on the half hour from Tyler McCarthy from an effort by Reece Deakin from 20 yards. At the other end Bentley Graham broke clear of the defence, putting Armstrong through but Taiwo Aliu made a good save. Aliu made another good save at the second attempt to deny Armstrong again in the 40th minute, and another from Chin's 43rd minute effort.
Leafe started the second half in the same vein. Wilson should have got a fifth in the 47th minute but Aliu made a good save. Graham's shot from the resultant corner was blocked by a defender. Greenwich never gave up and had several talented players on view but their play at times was as individuals rather than a team. They did however manage to get a consolation goal in the 66th minute when Ryan King-Elliott was brought down in the box and Deakin converted the spot kick. With the game safe manager Harry Hudson took the opportunity to give some of the substitutes game time, and one of them, Valentino Carpene came close in the 69th minute, forcing another save from Aliu. A minute later McCarthy saved at the other end from a deflected Reece Cave shot.
Leafe finished the game strongly but could not add to their lead. Bryan Akongo shot into the side netting and Chin and Ogboe had shots blocked.Greenwich ended with 10 men when Reece Cave was sent off late on for violent conduct, having foolishly grabbed Ogboe round the throat. Ogboe was rather harshly shown a yellow for pushing him away in self defence.
