Gaffer's Chat with Harry Hudson - 14/02/2019

After a couple of weeks away due to work commitments and a bad back, but not necessarily in that order, Whyteleafe FC committee member and motoring journalist, Steve Hole, sits down for a chat with Leafe boss, Harry Hudson for a round-up of the latest developments.

This week Harry talks about last week’s impressive performance and win away to Sevenoaks and looks forward to this Saturday's (February 9) home game when we entertain VCD Athletic (Church Road - 3pm) and brings us up to date with injuries and another new signing and just for good measure, another one!

Great performance away to Sevenoaks last Saturday, Harry. That must have really pleased you?
Yes, we reacted well following the disappointment of the Cray match on the Tuesday. The boys were determined to show a reaction against a potentially difficult away trip. I thought in the first half we were totally dominant and could have been 5-0 up. The second half was a different game though, the wind obviously played a part, but we took our foot off the gas and could have let Sevenoaks back into the game. That being said I would have taken 3-1 before kick-off and the three points is huge for our promotion push.

Some of the football we played was very impressive? Who stood out for you?
I think everyone was very good but I would single out Corey Holder and Chinny who I thought were particularly excellent.

This week we entertain VCD Athletic. They've slipped down the table in recent weeks, how do you see this one?
It was a very tight game at their place when we were coming out of a poor run of form so I imagine this game will be very different. VCD have some excellent individuals and we will have to be on our game to secure the much needed 3 points. It is very tight between Haywards Heath, Hythe Town, VCD and ourselves for that 5th place and no one can afford to slip up.

I guess it's always good to reverse a defeat from earlier in the season (Sevenoaks beat us at home)?
Certainly! We have a target as a group to not let anyone do the ‘double’ over us this year – only Three Bridges, Haywards Heath and Sittingbourne can do that now….

New signing Junior Aikhionbare looks an impressive new addition. What's his story?
Yes, he is an excellent addition to our squad. He started at Herne Bay before moving to Greenwich Borough last season. Before we signed him he was at Hythe Town so it is a coup for us to get him.

Random football question for you this week and this one is from me! Have you ever scouted a player and subsequently signed him, only to wonder within five minutes of his debut ‘what I have I done’? - don’t mention any names for goodness sake!
No names! No, but honestly not in regards to footballing ability but certainly some players I have recruited but for whatever reason they have not been right for the group and therefore have been moved on quickly.

Another random one for you. Is the FA Cup exploits of the likes of Newport County and AFC Wimbledon good for lower and non-league football?
Most certainly – the exposure of non-league clubs gives our end of the game more gravitas and improves the profile of players, staff and clubs.

Several fans have asked for a squad update, Harry. Can you bring us up to date with any recent player departures, please?
Yes, of course, as we have made a few changes recently but most have been additions rather than departures!
We added strikers Andre and Junior as alongside Laurent Mendy to bolster our midfield options.
David Owusu, Ashley Paul-Robinson, Dan Hogan and Adam Azeiz have been gaining minutes on a dual registration at Croydon FC. Simon and Gus have also signed dual registration forms to gain more minutes and we will monitor them closely. I also have one very exciting new signing to announce in Stefan Cox from Ashford United. Coxy is a winger with lots of experience at a variety of non-league clubs and will assist with our promotion push!

Finally, what’s the injury situation this week, Harry?
Andre should be back in training Thursday so we hope to include him on Saturday – fingers crossed!
