Report: Whyteleafe 1-4 VCD Athletic

This match was virtually decided by a controversial decision in the 41st minute, the referee awarding a penalty for handball against Ricardo Thompson, then sending him off. Up to this point Whyteleafe had the better of the chances and should really have been in front had they shown their usual finishing from goal scoring chances.

The first good chance fell to Leafe in the 14th minute. Bentley Graham found Marvin Armstrong and he made a strong run towards the visitors goal before firing just over from 20 yards. Armstrong then set up Valentino Carpene a minute later, but his shot was also too high.
Carpene sent Lauris Chin off on the left wing in the 18th minute, his cross beat the advancing keeper Jordan Beeney but was cleared by the defence. Carpene then had a shot well saved by Beeney. VCD's first chance came in the 26th minute. Jake McIntyre's free kick was only partially cleared to Charlie McDonald, his volley was well tipped over by Tyler McCarthy.
Kelvin Ogboe intercepted a pass in the 29th minute, took the ball into the box but shot just wide of the target. Corey Holder then tried a speculative shot from 35 yards that went just over the bar. Ali Fuseini was through on the Leafe goal in the 41st minute and his shot was saved by McCarthy, the ball falling to McDonald who's shot struck the hand of Thompson. The referee awarded a penalty and controversially showed the red card to the Leafe defender. McDonald cooly chipped the spot kick into the net to give VCD the lead.
Helge Orome had a chance in the 48th minute but his shot was blocked. The visitors were finding space with their man advantage, with Fuseini seeing his 52nd shot well saved by McCarthy. Alastair Gordon increased the lead in the 53rd minute shooting home from a Fuseini through ball.  McCarthy pulled off another good save in the 56th minute tipping over a good effort from Fuseini.
Lauris Chin pulled one back for the hosts in the 68th minute to give them hope, following a powerful run, his shot going through the legs of Jordan Beeney.  McDonald however quickly restored the visitors 2 goal lead when he got the visitors 3rd after 68 minutes following a quick break. Fuseini hit the post with an 89th minute effort, McCarthy saving from McDonalds follow up but a last minute goal from substitute Usman Adeniji from close range completed the scoring for the visitors.
