Report: Whyteleafe 2-2 Walton Casuals
Whyteleafe had the opportunity to test themselves against higher level opposition in this Surrey Senior Cup and came out with a lot of credit, only going down on penalties, and visiting manager Anthony Gale said after the game that Leafe were one of the better sides they had played this season and would easily hold their own in their league.
Leafe had the first good chance in the 11th minute, Kelvin Ogboe making a good run down the left before finding Valentino Carpene in the box. His shot was headed away by Kyron Farrell just past his own post.
James Ewington had the ball in the net in the 16th minute but was offside. At the other end a fine strike from Ogboe saw Denzil Farrar save at the 2nd attempt with Marvin Armstrong waiting to pounce. With the game flowing from end to end, Tyler McCarthy was then forced into action, saving a 25th minute header from Cole Brown following a free kick.
Armstrong made a strong run at the Casuals defence in the 35th minute having won the ball on the half way line and shot just wide. Another 25 yard effort from Bryan Akongo shot saw his effort from similar distance tipped round the post by Gerrar. Leafe went in at half time a goal down as they gifted the visitors a goal a minute before the break. They were passing the ball around deep in their own half when Corey Holder put a loose ball across the face of goal, and Ewington was first to reach it and tap the ball into the empty net.
Leafe came out in the second half playing positively and pulled back the goal in the 56th minute. Ogboe beat a defender on the left, found Carpene in the box who's first time shot beat Gerrar and found the back of the net. McCarthy made a fine save to stop IsaacSarpongs' 61st minute header, Helge Orome on hand to clear the loose ball. Ewington headed over when well placed in the 70th minute, and straight from the restart, Leafe attacked with Lauris Chin seeing his shot take a deflection and saved by Gerrar.
Ewington shot over in the 78th minute from the edge of the box before Casuals took an 81st minute lead, Dan Bennett scoring with a left foot shot from close range. Leafe however were not finished and in the 84th minute, good play between Bentley Graham and Wilson ended with Wilson firing home a low shot from 20 yards into the net. Arif Hattabi had a chance to give Leafe victory but his 20 yard effort in the 86th minute went just wide, and the game then went to penalties.
Both sides scored their first 2 penalties, with Wilson and Orome on target for Leafe. Casuals then scored again from their next 2, but when Farrar saved Hattabi's shot and Chin fired over the bar, Casuals were through to the next round.
