Report: Whyteleafe 0-1 Hastings Utd

Whyteleafe were beaten by league leaders Hastings by a single goal in a closely fought encounter.
Hastings had the first good chance when ex Leafe favourite Lanre Azeez made a strong run into the box and hit a fine shot that was tipped over by home keeper Tyler McCarthy.
Ronald Sobowale at the other end had a good chance in the 8th minute when he beat the defence but his shot was straight at keeper Louis Rogers. 6 minutes later Sobowale had another fine opportunity Jamie McGeoghegan played a superb through ball to him but again his shot was too near the keeper.
Hastings took the lead in the 18th minute. A controversial free kick was taken by Ryan Worrell, son of ex Leafe defender Roger, finding Craig Stone in the box, and he outjumped everyone to head the ball into the net. Corie Andrews looked to have got an equaliser when his 24th minute shot beat Rogers but was cleared off the line.

Stone went close again with another header in the 26th minute, this time from a long throw by Worrell, but it was over the bar. Sobowale at the other end was inches wide in the 33rd minute and in a game that went from end to end, former Leafe striker Daniel Ajakaiye struck the bar with a shot from another Worrell long throw.
Leafe looked lively in the second half with some clever substitutions from manager Harry Hudson but Hastings kept possession well and Leafe had to  work hard for their chances. Sobowale had one early in the half when his close range effort was deflected for a corner.
Hastings were playing the ball around at the back for long periods running down the clock, but in the 64th minute, Rogers took too long on the ball and his attempted clearance was blocked by Junior Aikhionbare. He retrieved the ball but his shot was wide of the target. Sobowale also went close in the 77th minute shooting just wide from a Peter Wedgeworth corner.
Deep into stoppage time Leafe were awarded a free kick some 27 yards out. The visitors seemed to think a cross was coming in as they didn't set a wall, but this was well within range of Wedgeworth and his well struck dipping shot was frustratingly close to an equaliser,  striking the bar, keeper Rogers just getting his fingertips to it, with what turned out to be the final action of the match.
