Last gasp equaliser earns point from Hythe

Whyteleafe and Hythe ended up sharing the points which effectively ended the hosts outside chance of a play off spot.

Hythe were a strong side and still chasing a play-off spot, looked to shut down Leafe quickly and catch them on the break. The Leafe defence were solid with John Scarborough leading them well and making two vital clearances.

Leafe's first chance came on nine minutes when a Liam Collins free kick found Jamahl Howlett-Mundle in the box but his header was straight at Joe Mant. At the other end Sam Adams put a 25 yard free kick wide, and Craig Cloke headed over from a corner. Matt Newman was then guilty of wasting their best chance in the 17th minute, with an open goal glaring at him, he sliced his effort high and wide.

Daniel Ajakaiye made a good run into the Cannons’ area in the 19th minute but was well tackled.  Sam Clayton then had a shot on the turn go wide after good work from Shawn Clement-Peter. Tyler Brown then had a shot deflected wide, and Howlett-Mundle headed over following a Clayton corner. Collins then found Ajakaiye in space, he played a one two with Clement -Peter but the return was a little too strong allowing Mant to come out and gather the ball.

Hythe finished the half strongly, Howlett-Mundle making a crucial intervention to block a shot from Jerald Aboagye then Scarborough made a brave headed clearance as Ryan Johnson was about to shoot.

Dean Grant had an early chance at the start of the second half, Ben Bridle-Card doing well to block his shot. Cloke then headed wide from a Newman cross. Lanre Azeez had a header from a Clayton cross in the 54th minute, but it went straight at Mant. This was to be his last involvement as he limped off with an ankle injury. His replacement, Kelvin Ogboe was in the thick of the action within two minutes of coming on, Clayton sent Clement-Peter away on the right, his cross found Ogboe who's shot was blocked. He followed up but Mant saved his effort. Olumide Oluwatimilehin then headed wide from a Clayton corner. Ogboe then found Ajakaiye in space but Mant made a good save from his shot from a wide angle.

Hythe took the lead in the 75th minute, ironically following a strong spell from the visitors. Cloke was up again for a free kick from Wilson, and his firm header was beyond the reach of Bridle Card and into the net.

Leafe had not given up however. Oluwatimilehin saw an 84th minute shot saved, then Scarborough headed over the bar from an 88th minute GBentley Graham corner.

The game came to a dramatic conclusion. With the last of three minutes stoppage time virtually up, Leafe were awarded a corner and put nine men into the penalty area. Bridle-Card on the half way line and Graham taking the corner the only other Leafe players on the pitch. The ball came into a crowded area and after a battle to win possession, Leafe came out on top, Howlett-Mundle finding Clement-Peter in front of goal and he managed to find a space through the crowd to shoot into the net.

The equaliser was right on time, the referee blowing the final whistle as soon as the restart was made.
