Report: Haywards Heath 3-1 Whyteleafe

Whyteleafe's chances of a play off place ended with their 5th consecutive defeat which leaves them 14 points off 5th place. Although disappointing after holding a top 5 spot for much of the season, Harry Hudson and his team have still met expectations for the season with a new young side. Without the loss of several players to injury Leafe may well have still been in the mix for the play offs.

The game was played in gale force winds which got stronger as the game went on. Leafe were the better of the sides in the first half and went close after just 4 minutes. Ashley-Paul Robinson returned to the side after a lengthy spell out with injury and a superb ball split the home defence and Bradley Wilson, running on to it, was only denied by a great saving tackle. Robinson however provided the assist for Leafe's goal in the 13th minute, Aikhionbare heading home his cross.

Leafe were generally the better side in the first half in difficult conditions without seriously threatening the goal. The visitors also didn't look like scoring being reduced to a hopeful wind assisted 40 yard free kick in the 40th minte from Alex Laing and a mis hit shot from Callum Saunders  that landed on the roof of the net.

The second half was a completely different affair with the hosts dominating it. Leafe failed to clear a 56th minute cross and Andy Dalhouse took advantage, heading into the net. Six minutes later a great strike from the edge of the box from Saunders gave Tyler McCarthy no chance.

Robinson continued to be the main threat from Leafe, his dangerous crosses on 3 occasions  being taken by the wind just out of range of the Leafe attack. A foul in the penalty area in the 74th minute saw the hosts awarded a penalty. Saunders converted it to ensure the hosts kept their play off place.

Marvin Armstrong was close to a consolation in stoppage time, hitting the side netting and the game ended in deteriorating conditions with John Heyburns goal kick being blown back behind him and off the pitch. Difficult times for Leafe but they should be pleased with the season overall so far.
