Gaffer’s Chat with Harry Hudson - 24/08/2019
G’day Bruce, er, sorry, Harry, great to see you back, mate. Good season opener against Herne Bay last Saturday. A 2-2 draw is a fair result, but I expect Calum told you we were dominant in the game? Indeed, one of their fans said that we should have won it 7-1! Spilt milk and all that…but that actually looks like a decent result after Herne Bay’s subsequent result on Tuesday evening? Thanks – it is great to be back! By all accounts we deserved to pick up the three points on Saturday but it wasn’t meant to be on the day. We always talk about the most important thing being the performance level and then results will look after themselves; from what I have heard our performance was excellent so that is the most important thing.
Talking of Tuesday evening. What a great performance away at Chichester City. There seems to be added steel and determination this season? Last term we may not have been able to not only come back twice but go on to win the game? Thoughts on that one? I thought Chichester were a very good outfit and I think they will do very well this year. In the first half they were better than us and I think deserved to go in at half time leading. We made a few changes to our structure at half time and I think we really bossed the second half. That being said, after the penalty miss, I would have taken a point so to get the winner felt fantastic. I hope we have added steel this year but we will find out for sure in the coming weeks!
Where do you stand on the opinion of one long term fan who reckons that this side is already playing better football than last season’s. I suspect I know your answer to this…but I told him I’d ask! Do not forget that I am only but a messenger! It will always take some time for the team to gel and I hope we still have many levels of improvement to make as the season progresses but I think it has been a very positive start. It is important we maintain this level of performance and make improvements where possible to our tactical plan. If we can keep everyone fit you never know what the season could hold.
Moving swiftly on. FA Cup duties this Saturday. A short trip, this time over to Eltham, to face Cray Valley Paper Mills. They’ve just come up but like Chichester City, definitely are no mugs. This will be a tough one? A good cup run keeps the doctor away, but does it interfere with league progress? Cray will be a very good side and it is a difficult draw in the FA Cup for us – especially away from home. It is important for the finances of the club that we try and go as far as we can in all FA Competitions.
Bank Holiday Monday and back to BetVictor South East action and we entertain the good folk from Guernsey – Church Road 3pm. They’ve started off well with two solid away draws. Not one to be underestimated? The games are coming thick and fast! Guernsey are never to be underestimated and I thoroughly enjoyed our two games against them last season. From what I understand they are more offensive this year, demonstrated by scoring six goals in two games, so we will need to be defensively secure too.
So, although it’s very early days yet, any surprising results so far? Haywards Heath are already two points clear at the top of the table, I see. Leafe are in fifth, happy with that? Yes I would have taken four points from the first two games – it is very early days in the season but you certainly don’t want to be playing catch up if you start poorly.
Bentley limped off in the first half at Chichester City, will he be available for Saturday? Anyone else struggling? He will be touch and go for Saturday – so fingers crossed.
