Report: East Grinstead Town 1-8 Whyteleafe

Whyteleafe thrashed an undisciplined East Grinstead side, with their biggest win for many seasons to bring them their 5th win in 6 matches, a remarkable turn around from the previous 14 games from which Leafe failed to win any.

East Grinstead has been a happy hunting ground for Leafe since their return to this league 3 years ago. In the first season back they scored 19 times in 3 matches including a cup tie and today was even more emphatic although the hosts lack of discipline was largely responsible for their downfall.

Leafe went close in the 4th minute. A great through ball to Lanre Azeez saw him break clear of the defence. Ryan Nicholls did well to come out and narrow the angle, and his shot went just wide.

The Wasps were reduced to 10 men following an off the ball incident that saw captain Drew Cooney sent off for striking Scott Day. Sam Clayton took the free kick, Nicholls tipping his shot round the post. From the resultant Clayton corner, Day headed wide.
At the other end Will Hoare found Isaac Hutchinson in the box. Bradley Simms did well to block his shot on the line.

The unfortunate Charlie Ferguson was then sacrificed for his captains misdemeanor and substituted as the hosts tried to shore up there defence. Had they known what was coming they may not have bothered. Hutchinson tried his luck from long range in the 21st minute but shot straight at Kyle Merson.

Leafe took the lead in the 23rd minute, Azeez finding Tommy Hutchings on the edge of the box. His shot was saved by Nicholls but he couldn't hold on to it and Azeez following up shot into the back of the net. Straight from the kick off, Azeez won the ball and ran down the right. Still in the 23rd minute Day headed into the back of the net for Leafe's second.
The rest of the half was fairly quiet until the final minute when Sam Clayton made a run into the box and was brought down. Such was the nature of the hosts complaint that 3 of them were shown yellow cards for dissent. Clayton stepped up yo take the spot kick, hammering it into the bottom left corner to give the visitors a 3 goal interval lead.

If the first half had been a nightmare for the hosts, it soon became worse in the 52nd minute. Leo Mazzone was sent off for bringing down Hutchings in the box as he was about to shoot. Clayton again took the spot kick, same place, same result, 4 up to the Leafe.
The hosts discipline did not improve as further fouls produced yellow cards. There was a real danger they would be further reduced and substitutions were made to withdraw some of the booked players.

Leafe brought on Josh Adusei in the 59th minute and he made an immediate impact scoring with his first touch when Day headed on Cormac Hegarty's corner to him.  The 6th was soon to follow, Hegarty again the provider, crossing for Day to head home the 6th.
East Grinstead to their credit didn't give up and looked dangerous on the break for the next 15 minutes or so. Merson tipped round a good effort from Jack Bray, before the hosts pulled one back in the 68th minute, Marcus Elliott heading home from a cross on the left.

Hutchings went close in the 70th minute, then in the 81st minute, Clayton and Day, both on hat tricks, were unfortunate not to score. Clayton's shot was saved by Nicholls, and Day following up fired home but was ruled offside. Day was close again in the 83rd minute when his shot from an Azeez cross was tipped onto the bar.

Leafe's 7th came in the 88th minute when Vance Bola played a neat one two with Azeez, then found Hutchings who scored from close range. Leafe completed the rout in the 90th minute when Antonio Simeone headed home a Clayton corner.

Whyteleafe Team: Merson, Simms (Douglas 64), Hegarty, Graham (Adusei 59), Scarborough, Simeone, Azeez, Ibrahim, Hutchings, Day (Bola 85), Clayton.  subs not used Adonis-Taylor, Clement-Peter.
