Under 10 Wanderers match reports

Whyteleafe U10 Wanderers v Woodmansterne Hyde U10s
Saturday 9th April 2016

After the excitement of the previous day’s achievements in reaching the EMC Academy Easter Tournament Final it was back to league matters as Whyteleafe entertained Woodmansterne in our last league game of the season. Woodmansterne have had mixed results but did reach the semi-final of one of the cups.

The Wanderers boys though have played very well recently, so their performances were expected to continue - and they made a cracking start. Forcing a corner after two minutes and Skinner's delivery saw Daniel score with a bullet header past the keeper to open the scoring.

This boosted the team’s confidence and they created two more chances: Daniel's shot saved by the keeper's feet and Joe just shooting wide. A very good start.

Woodmansterne played three at the back and Leafe soon got to grips on how they wanted to play. Their forward was a little tricky but we defended well against him. Sean F and Nathan were defending extremely well together and William M's handling was excellent.

Wanderers continued to attack, Skinner forcing a save from their keeper, William P going close. Kanye, playing in central midfield started to dominate, winning his tackles and setting up attacks. After 15 minutes the lead was doubled and deservedly so. Kanye winning the ball in midfield, drove at their defence and passed to William P who had all the time in the world and scored with a great shot into the corner of the goal.

Everyone was really pleased for William, he has worked extremely hard recently and took his goal with confidence. Leafe continued to press up to half time, Joe having a couple of shots wide but it was 2-0 at half time.

A dominant half, and perhaps the margin could have been greater if Leafe had been more composed in front of goal.

Woodmansterne were expected to come at Whyteleafe in the second half but the boys were ready. The start saw both sides competing very well, no real chances were created.

Woodmansterne were hitting the long ball all the time, so it was pleasing to see how Nathan/Ryan/Sean F were dealing with this tactic. Daniel switched to centre midfield and started stroking the ball around the pitch, making it easier for Joe, William and Skinner to attack. He made passing look so easy.

Joe was at his best, competing for every ball, not giving their players any time on the ball and they began to get a little frustrated. Joe could have scored a hat trick in a short space of time, keeper saving one shot and two hit just wide. Whyteleafe continued to play all the football, it was nice to see. William M in goal, without having to do too much, handled every with aplomb. Eventually the game petered out and there were no further goals.

So, the team’s good form continued, a clean sheet to boot, another excellent all round team display with two well taken goals.

Man of the match - Joe and Dan were excellent, however, Mr Mountain, with a sore thumb, had a solid game, great handling, he has improved a lot recently and a clean sheet!! Well done.

Epsom & Ewell v Whyteleafe U10 Wanderers
March 2016

Following on from last week's performance against AFC Ewell, we made another trip to Epsom this time to play Epsom & Ewell Colts. They are a new team and have done quite well this season.

The pitch was very similar to the previous week, quite a slope and uneven and playing good football on it would be a challenge. We welcomed back Kanye this week who showed us his prematch routine - X Factor dancing skills!

We kicked off playing uphill and immediately took the game to E&E. Some good play down the right from Skinner saw his shot go wide. In fact the first five minutes we were quite dominant, winning almost every 50/50 challenge. At the back both Sean F and Nathan showed great composure on the ball.

Despite the pitch, we got our passing game going and one move saw Nathan pass to Joe, to Skinner and onto Daniel whose shot was saved by the keeper - a terrific move.

We continued to defend really well, William M in goal was a spectator for most of the first half. Nathan was in excellant form, time and time again showing great composure and passing. Skinner continued his good form playing on right midfield. making great runs, using his pace with good effect. We had a really good shape, Joe and Kanye complimenting each other in midfield. E&E do compete though and it was an intriguing game. 0-0 at half time.

A good half, defensively, especially going up the slope.

The 2nd half started like the first half. Whyteleafe taking the game to E&E. Joe had a couple of long shots, Kanye's workrate was fantastic in the middle. Defenisively we remained resolute, offensively though we lacked a bit of creativity. William P was working hard down the right and Sean F and Ryan were making some great tackles/blocks. Despite being the better team, E & E took the lead after good work from their left midfielder saw a good cross finished well by their attacker with a good header into the top corner. It was a very good goal. 1-0 but against the run of play. We had lots of attacking throw ins and some half chances but E & E defended well. Joe had a shot well saved by their keeper, SKinner shot wide when he had a bit of time and space. We just couldn't create another chance. Full Time 1-0.

We dominated the game, confirmed by the E & E Manager who said we were the better team, but lost to a very good goal. On the positive side though, we defended extremely well and the boys worked very hard for each other. The boys are beginning to get what we want from them - work ethic, team work and to think on their own feet.

Man of the Match - Again the whole team contributed, but two boys excelled themselves Kanye & Nathan, and Nathan just pipped it by having his best performance in a Whyteleafe shirt.

Ewell v Whyteleafe
March 2016

As both teams were knocked out the cup last week, we had a rearranged league game today against a team who beat us comfortably before Xmas.

We woke up with frost and by the time we got to Ewell it was bitterly cold and it finished with heavy sleet! The Tea lady was very busy serving teas and bacon rolls.

We kicked off attacking the goal downhill. Joe had an early chance to round the keeper but their defender cleared well. However, we took the lead when Dan's throw to Joe saw his cross missed by the defender and Skinner converted well. Within a minute Ewell equalised when a mix up in defence saw their striker hit a great shot into the top corner.

We took the lead when from Skinner's corner, Dan flicked the ball on and Joe stabbed home from a yard out. From the kick off Ewell equalised again as they sliced open our defence like a knife through butter and scored a simple goal. Skinner missed a great chance and was kicking air and not the ball when presented with a 1 on 1 with the keeper.

Skinner was then injured and we put Dan upfront and William P played centre mid and this changed the game. William's pass to Joe on the halfway line, Joe hit a long ball to Dan, the keeper came out and misjudged the bounce of the ball and it went over his head into the net.

Dan was in the zone taking players on, playing all that FIFA is having an effect! Joe was having a stormer and another cross saw Dan loop a head pass the keeper to score.

Ewell then hit the bar. They do like to shoot. The team shape was excellent, we were more assured at the back, Sean F really excelled playing right mid. William P was working really hard.

Further pressure saw us extend our lead, Joe to Dan and Dan's cross was deflected in by the defender for an own goal. Confidence grew, Dan had a shot well saved, then William to Dan, his shot was well saved and Sean F followed up to knock in the rebound from an acute angle before half Time.

So we had done the easy bit, the hard bit was going uphill. We had to calm the boys down a bit and made sure we got our tactics spot on.

Sean F reverted back to centre half with Nathan with Skinner, Joe and Will in mid with Dan upfront. We started off really well. Skinner, Will and Dan working really hard to get possession.

Work-rate was phenomenal. Joe made four or five great tackles. We continued to defend really well. Our pressure created several corners. Then the best goal of the game, Joe winning the ball from Nathan's clearance and hitting a cracking half volley which flew into the top corner a well-deserved hat trick. Surely a contender for the goal of the season!

The boys maintained their shape but started to tire as they had put so much effort into the performance. Now it was the turn of the defenders to take centre stage. William M made two great point blank saves, Sean F was being a nuisance to Ewell putting his foot in time and time again.

Nathan, now playing midfield, was getting involved supporting his defenders. We had time to score an eighth goal when Joe's throw was dropped by the keeper and William P stabbed home from two yards. There was still time for Skinner to blast over the bar before Ewell scored a good goal to make it.

Fantastic, best performance of the season and we did a nice debrief with the parents afterwards. To score eight goals was great

Man of the match - the whole team performed really well, however, one boy whose work-rate was really good today and capped it off with a goal was William P.

Whyteleafe v Leatherhead
January 2016

So back to league action as we took on Leatherhead with fixture reversed to our pitch due to the weather and what a game as we came from behind 3 times in a 10 goal thriller.

The early exchanges saw both sides seizing up each other and Leatherhead had the better of these exchanges. We gave the ball away from our throw and Leatherhead scored. Within a minute we levelled as good work from Nathan and Kanye saw the ball go to Joe who turned inside two players and score.

We let in another scrappy goal two mins later before Joe levelled again combining with Sean T on the left. We then had a good spell, hitting the bar and twice their keeper made great saves. Daniel in particular was influential breaking up lots of attacks and using his vision to pass the ball with great effect. Joe was playing really well and involving his midfielders.

Sean F and Nathan were stronger at the back though Leatherhead took the lead for a third time with William M unable to keep a shot out. We made some changes putting William P and Sean F into midfield and Skinner up front with Ryan at the back. With these changes we dominated the last 10 minutes playing really well on the counter attack creating some good chances but their keeper was having a blinder. Kanye came on into centre midfield and carried on where Daniel left off, controlling play and setting up attacks.

We focussed on the positives at half time and we were pleased at the number of chances we created.

We started strongly in the second half and Joe went close twice and Sean T shot wide. Joe was a handful, pressing very well. William P and Kanye continued their good work. Our pressure paid off when Joe's tenacity saw him win the ball get through two tackles and get a well-deserved hat trick. With the score level once more Sean T was getting into the groove and following good link up play with Joe, saw Joe's shot well saved and with the goal at his mercy Sean blasted wide with his left foot when he should have used his right foot. William M then made a good save.

Two mins later we were awarded a penalty for handball and Sean F duly dispatched the penalty and we took the lead for the first time. To Leatherhead's credit they never gave up without creating much and then scored the goal of the game. Their midfielder fired into the top corner from 20 yards - a great strike!

With 10 mins to go there was plenty of time left and then we scored a peach of a goal, Nathan breaking up play, the ball went to Sean T who held the ball up and then played a great ball to Joe who held off the defender and scored. Within a minute Joe scored his 5th and our 6th with a deflected shot. Kanye shot wide, Skinner and Sean T could have both scored and goal line technology prevented another goal for Leatherhead.

Very pleasing performance, we played some great football and the boys continue to develop their match awareness and created loads of chances. The Leatherhead keeper played really well.

Man of the Match awarded Joe, but special mention also to Dan, William P and Kanye.

As usual great support from all!
