Gaffer's Chat with Harry Hudson - 10/01/2019

Whyteleafe FC fan and motoring journalist, Steve Hole, gets the Bovril out this week for a natter with Leafe boss, Harry Hudson, to discuss the superb 4-1 home win last Saturday against struggling Greenwich Borough.

Harry also looks forward to this coming Saturday’s crunch away trip to the seaside to face Horsham – equal on points but one place below us on goal difference.

Now, the eagle-eyed amongst will have noticed the words ‘seaside’ and ‘Horsham’ in the sentence above and figured that I am clearly useless at geography as Horsham is well inland and not by the sea. Aha, I may well be rubbish at geography BUT Horsham play their home games at the Sussex FA HQ in sunny Lancing, which is right by the sea!

So, more from Harry as he brings us his thoughts and important team news, the ins, the outs, and the highs and lows.

Great win last Saturday, Harry. You and Calum seemed to be purring at times during the game such was the quality of football the boys played? That had to be as pleasing as the result?
Yes, certainly a pleasing result which we would have been happy with at the start of the game. However, we were 4-0 up within the first half an hour so we would have preferred an improved second half performance.

We demand a lot from the group and even though we secured the three points we dropped our level after the break which is something we need to guard against.

The ‘goals for’ column is racking up nicely. Do you think goal difference will come into play when we get to the business end of the season?
At the moment, yes, I would say so as it is incredibly tight! Who knows if a group will break away but having a strong goal difference can be almost worth an extra point at the end of the season.

Winger Kelvin Ogboe seems to have settled in nicely? He scored on his home debut against Greenwich Borough. Tell us a bit more about the lad?
Kelvin has come to us from Hastings United where he started the season. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury and then struggled to get back into their starting team. We have been in the market for a winger for some time now and Kelvin fits our profile! He will only get better and better as he regains his match fitness so he will be very important to us for the final part of the season.

Big test on Saturday away to Horsham. Is the word ‘pivotal’ too strong to describe the importance of this one – not to mention the following Saturday’s visit to Hastings?
It is a massive month ahead in terms of league fixtures – after Hastings we play Phoenix and then league leaders, Cray Wanderers! There is a long way to go even after these matches but we will certainly know where we will be after the next four games.  Horsham will be a tough test as I was impressed with them when we played at our place early in the season and I am sure they will be looking for the reverse result on Saturday!

Talking of pivotal, I know everyone was a bit worried about our captain, Nathan Campbell being out for a few months, but the rest of the defence has stepped up manfully haven’t they? Corey, Helge and Ricardo have been playing out of their skins.
Yes, it was always going to be tough with Nathan out for a considerable amount of time but I can only praise how the other players have stepped up in his place. We do not have the resources to go and replace Nathan so had to look internally and I could not be happier.

Right back Harvey Brand has also impressed the fans. He’s only been with us for a short while but he’s fitted straight in. What’s his football story?
Harvey was at Thamesmead before a short spell at Margate. He is an excellent footballer who has learnt our system very quickly and again will only get better and better.

Aside from the recovering Ashley-Paul Robinson any other injuries this week? Was Dan Hector’s ankle injury worse than first thought as he’s been out for several weeks now.
There is a chance Hector could be available this week so fingers crossed on that one. Ash is making excellent progress and will dual sign to pick up minutes in the next week or so. Dan Hogan is also back to training this week so we are getting bodies back!
