Whyteleafe Ladies went into their penultimate league game against Guildford Saints Ladies knowing a win would see them crowned Surrey County Womens and Girls champions in their very first season. The girls were very motivated to win this game and get the league title wrapped up before their two cup finals.
The ladies made a bright start to the game and they didn’t have to wait long to take the lead, Katie Butts picking up the ball on the right winger dribbling past three players then smashing the ball into the top corner.
Two minutes later Steph Mann was put through one-on-one with the Guildford goalkeeper and she slotted the ball calmly into the bottom right hand corner which made it 0-2 to Whyteleafe Ladies inside 15 minutes.
As half time approached there was another Whyteleafe goal, Jade Elston added her name to the scoresheet after she took the ball past a couple of Guildford defenders and curled the ball out of the reach of the Guildford goalkeeper and into the net.
The home side made a strong start to the second half and jumped on a Whyteleafe mistake at the back to pull the score back to 1-3. It took our girls ten minutes but they regained control of the game with a good spell of possession and that ended in Amanda Hollidge making it 1-4. The game was drawing to an end but there was still enough time for the Leafe Ladies to make it 1-5 when Katie Butts crossed for Danielle Johnson to score.
The full time whistle was greeted with celebrations from the players and coaching staff as after a long season Whyteleafe Ladies were finally champions.
However the season doesn’t stop there for our girls they are in two cup finals, the League Cup final on 23rd April just down the road at Merstham Football Club that is a 2pm kick off. Then finally the Capital Cup final on 7th May at Bedfont sports club also a 2pm kick off. All support is welcome at both finals and it would be great to see as many Leafe supporters there a possible to cheers the girls on to what could be a terrific treble.
