Notes from the Development Squad managerDevelopment squad manager, Dave Matthews, on the progress of his team competing in the Bluefin Development League in 2017-18.
The Development Squad secured a first victory of their Bluefin Development League South campaign with a hard fought 2-1 win against Ashford United at Church Road.
After a disappointing start to the season with back to back defeats to Greenwich Borough and Ramsgate, Leafe were the better side in the opening exchanges, only for the visitors to seize control and take advantage from the penalty spot mid-way through the first half. The home sided responded sluggishly but finally created an opening through some smart play from Ben Connolly, who found Jake Connaris unmarked in the box who coolly dispatched to level the game going into the break.
Leafe begun the second half on the front foot, and got their reward. Kai Brewster produced a good run down the right hand side and into the box before cutting back for Ben Connolly, who finished superbly into the far corner for his second goal in as many games.
As the away side went searching for an equaliser, substitute Dennis Asante was denied by the Ashford United goalkeeper to seal the win late on with a third goal, but a stubborn defensive performance from the home side for the remainder of the game restricted their opponents to limited chances and protected the valuable one goal lead to give them a well-earned three points. The side have a week off next week before a trip down to Hastings a week on Monday.
