Report: South Park 1-2 Whyteleafe

Whyteleafe played their first group match in the Velocity Trophy, the group format being introduced to replace lost fixtures since the reduction of clubs in the level 4 leagues.
South Park started brightly and took a 7th minute lead through a speculative shot from Louie Downey wide on the right that flew over Tyler McCarthy and somewhat wind assisted hit the back of the net. McCarthy made a couple of good early saves, firstly from a well struck Hayden Skerry free kick, then from a 14th minute Reece Williams-Bowers header.
Leafe were struggling to get into their normal rhythm, not helped by the blustery conditions, but there were signs towards the end of the half that they were getting on top and the general feeling was that they had a good chance in the second half. A couple of late Leafe attacks were promising without producing a shot on target.
The format of this competition allows for 5 substitutes, so manager Harry Hudson made 2 at half time and another 3 twenty minutes into the half.  With plenty of fresh legs Leafe began to dominate and a large share of possession with chances coming frequently. Ronald Sobowale shot over in the 58th minute following a great move then a minute later Tre Daley forced a good save from Sam Freeman. The keeper then made another good save from a well struck Sobowale free kick in the 63rd minute.
Leafe's well deserved equaliser came in the 67th minute. A long ball found Sobowale on the left edge of the box. A great first touch and a run into the box saw him beat 2 defenders and slot the ball into the net at the near post past Freeman.
South Park did come close to a goal at the other end, Corey Holder making a great stop on the line to keep the ball out. Mason Sanders-Henry forced a good save in the 79th minute then his 82nd minute corner was headed over by Sontan.  Sobowale had an 88th minute header tipped over then Masampu had a shot blocked.
As the game went into stoppage time a draw was looking likely. The rules of the group stages allow for one point each, but then penalties are taken with an extra point for the side winning the shoot out.
4 minutes into stoppage time Joshua Malcolm was brought down just outside the box. Sobowale took the kick which was blocked by the wall, but the ball fell to the feet of Sontan who gleefully hammered the ball into the net for the winner.
Whyteleafe: McCarthy, Mensah,  O'Donoghue (Olurunnisomo),  Campbell (Masampu 45), Thompson (Malcolm 65), Holder, Daley, McGeoghegan (Boly 65), Sobowale, Sontan, Andrews (Sanders-Henry 45).
